Gum Arabic Buyer's Guide: Grades, Specifications and Pricing

Gum arabic reaches the market in two commercially distinct forms. Hashab, from Acacia senegal, is the premium grade favoured for beverage emulsions and pharmaceutical applications thanks to its higher arabinogalactan-protein content and pale colour. Talha, from Acacia seyal, is darker and lower in viscosity, and is commonly specified for dietary fibre and industrial use where colour is less critical.

Within each variety, price is driven by processing. Raw sortings and siftings sit at the bottom of the range; hand-picked cleaned lumps command a premium; kibbled, granulated and spray-dried powders add processing cost but reduce your own handling. Buying a cheaper grade you then have to clean is rarely an economy.

Specify moisture, ash, acid-insoluble matter and colour explicitly in your contract, and require a pre-shipment certificate of analysis against those limits. Codex, FCC and EU E414 references give you a defensible baseline if a lot arrives out of specification.

Finally, plan around the harvest calendar. Tapping runs through the dry season and availability of the best grades tightens sharply towards the end of the season, when both price and lead time rise. Booking early against a fixed specification is usually cheaper than buying spot in the last quarter of the season.
