Market Insight: African Agricultural Commodity Outlook
Demand drivers for gum arabic, hibiscus and sesame, and what buyers should watch this season.
Demand for gum arabic continues to be underpinned by the global beverage industry and by growth in dietary fibre applications. Supply, concentrated in the Sahel belt, remains sensitive to rainfall, security conditions and logistics corridors, which keeps volatility structurally high.
Hibiscus demand is expanding beyond herbal tea into natural colourants and functional beverages as manufacturers reformulate away from synthetic colours. Buyers increasingly specify pesticide-residue limits and steam sterilisation, which narrows the qualified supplier pool.
Sesame is the most liquid of the three, with tahini, oil pressing and bakery demand competing for the same crop. Oil content and purity drive premiums; sortex-cleaned 99.95% purity lots trade well above natural mixed grades.
For the coming season, the practical advice is unchanged: contract early against a written specification, qualify a second origin before you need it, and treat inspection as insurance rather than overhead.
